The question posed for this shoot was why and how could Leeds keep producing these amazing elite athletes for the arduous sport of triathlons? So I spent time at the university of Leeds and the Brownlee Centre capturing the athletes in training. Up at the crack of dawn to shoot open water training at Otley, on the pontoon for one shoot as the athletes dived in, keeping balanced to protect my camera but getting the shot was an experience!
Photographing the coach Malcolm Brown in action, who had coached the Brownlee brothers since the age of 16, was a real privilege. And in his words about why Leeds can produce these athletes he said was about, “Yorkshire grit, endurance and the rugged landscape of Yorkshire”. I captured all of this and more in the shoot from the community triathlon events to the World Series hosted in Leeds.
